Zakiya Harris started her journey in dance at the early age of three years old. She began dancing at the Bernice Johnson performing arts school in Queens, NY. Many legendary performers came out through this school such as Michael Peters (choreographer for Michael Jackson), Ben Vereine, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, and Ashanti just to name a few. During Ms. Harris time at the school she was a favorite of all of her teachers especially Carolyn Devore. Devore later started her own school where Zakiya started to show her real love for dance. Ms. Harris is a certified dance teacher and arts coordinator for the New York City Department of Education at the Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts. Zakiya also was invited to teach a series of special West African dance workshops at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. She has a B.A in Psychology, from Hampton University and a M.A in Dance Education from New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development Music and Performing Arts Professions. From 2003- 2005 Zakiya toured the world with Step Afrika! They traveled and performed in places such as Anchorage, Alaska, International Cultural Festival Johannesburg, South Africa, Associano Cultural Bloco Carnavalesco lle Aiye Sao Paulo, Brazil, and to over 30 cities throughout the United States performing at Universities and festivals. She also travelled as dance captain and rehearsal director with Asase Yaa African American Dance Theatre. Going to places such as Dance Africa Chicago at the Dubois Museum and the Harris theater, Arizona State University presenting "Ananse", and the Wofabe West African Dance and Drum Conference, Newark, NJ.
Zakiya Harris is the Artistic Director and Co- founder of Asase Yaa School of the Arts. She bought in world-renowned teachers from acclaimed institutions such as Alvin Ailey, New York City Ballet, Les Ballet Africans, and Dance Theater of Harlem. Zakiya Harris' main purpose is to promote the growth, and raise the standards of performance of dance and performing arts to the highest level.
