AY WELL+FIT

Our AY WELL+FIT STUDIO (AY, Asase Yaa) mission is to treat wellness and fitness holistically. We want to help motivate adults of all ages and genders to reach peak physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being in a welcoming, familial, and supportive environment that embraces building a healthier lifestyle community.

Our ten class themes integrate a fusion of fun with world music and Indigenous dance styles from West Africa, Soca from the Caribbean, Afrobeat and Hip Hop, which are popular worldwide, and urban line dancing.

We also offer Vinyasa Yoga from India, and more traditional fitness classes, aerobics, boxing, stretch, and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) for those seeking a high-caliber fitness challenge. Our other services include Reiki, and private  massage therapy.

Top professional instructors teach our classes in their areas of specialization. We designed them to be affordable and to help prevent heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, obesity in our community, and to generate measurable improvements in cardio, strength, endurance.

AY WELL+FIT STUDIO is based in Brooklyn, NY. The studio is 3500 sq ft, airy with natural light from windows, wood-sprung floors, air conditioning, and restrooms located directly across from the studio. Floor mats are available for $5. Each class can comfortably accommodate 20 people, which enables us to maintain an intimate and focused environment.

The origins and inspiration for WELL+FIT began about five years ago under the umbrella of Brooklyn-based nonprofit Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation, which is celebrating its 23rd year as one of the city’s most revered African performing arts organizations that services youth 3-18, has an award-winning professional Asase Yaa African American Theater dance/drum ensemble, and the Asase Yaa Theater Company, both which comprise adults.

Asase Yaa’s Executive Director Kofi Osei Williams was initially inspired to create a fitness and wellness space for the parents of youth that were attending their School of the Arts to enjoy. That early iteration featured six classes, but low attendance exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to move locations derailed the concept temporarily. Once Asase Yaa landed a new permanent location, Williams immediately rejuvenated and expanded the concept to a full service wellness and fitness studio.

Dance Classes

OUR Classes

Join us for 10 exciting classes from Monday to Saturday at various times. Each class is just $20 and lasts an hour, except for our quick HIIT sessions which are 20-30 minutes. West African Dance

This high-energy class fuses deep-rooted and Indigenous West African Djembe dance rhythms, movements, and live drumming (from Guinea, Mali, and Ivory Coast) with a fitness twist. The pulsating drum beats and dance routines will uplift your spirits and strengthen your body from head to toe.

Afrobeat-FIT

Afrobeat-FIT is a dynamic full-body workout that combines traditional and contemporary, globally popular Afrobeat music with exercises tailored to boost your cardio and make you feel empowered and vibrant.

Soca-FIT

If you’re looking for a fitness class that feels like a dance party—Soca-FIT is it! Inspired by the Caribbean’s most popular music genre, Soca (originated in Trinidad and Tobago), brace yourself for infectious beats, non-stop cardio, and strength movements that we guarantee will leave you feeling drenched in sweat.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa yoga has its roots in the ancient traditions of India, emerging from the foundational practices of Hatha yoga. Our class focuses on sustaining the fluidity of movement, where each pose seamlessly transitions into the next, synchronizing breath with motion. It’s designed to spur inner calm and rejuvenation, while energizing and building strength and flexibility.

Core Aerobics workout

Our Core Aerobics workout will help strengthen and sculpt your core. It targets your abs, obliques, lower back, and midsection, which will enhance your posture and balance.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

This workout lives up to its name and is not for the faint of heart. It blends intense cardio and strength training intervals to maximize calorie burn and enhance endurance. If you’re willing to push your limits, you’ll feel immense gratification and will achieve your fitness goals faster.

Boxing Workout

Our Boxing Workout Class will help you unleash your inner fighter. It’s fun, energetic, and you’ll learn high-intensity boxing techniques including a variety of powerful punch combinations, dynamic footwork, and core-strengthening drills to boost your strength, endurance and self-confidence.

90s Hip Hop Dance

You’ll time travel back to experience the seminal and infectious rhythms of 90s Hip-Hop dance and music. Once you step on the dance floor, learn some new footwork, bold body popping, and dance moves that defined and shaped the evolution of hip music and dance into one of the world’s most popular art forms.

Stretch Class

The Stretch Class combines a balanced blend of deep stretching and gentle movements that will help improve your flexibility, range of motion, alleviate stress, reduce tension, and promote overall well-being.

Urban R&B Line Dance

Our Urban Line Dance Class features a modern twist and dynamic fusion of rhythm movements to traditional line dancing. It’s a fun and energetic workout driven by contemporary choreography.
